In January of this year, 136 community volunteers came together to assist in making the 2024 Point in Time Count (annual census of all people experiencing homelessness on a given day of the year) successful. During this one day only event, 518 people experiencing homelessness were identified in Denton County. The data we collected plays a critical role in funding levels in the future as well as strategies and goals the community can adopt to make homelessness rare, brief and nonrecurring.

On the morning of May 29th, the Denton County Homeless Coalition was honored to host nearly 70 people at our State of Homelessness event. This event acts as our annual reveal of data collected during the PIT Count, as well as data that was collected year round in 2023 from our community-wide data dashboard, and strategic goals the Coalition and Denton County Housing and Homelessness Leadership Team have created. 2024’s PIT Count saw a record breaking number of people experiencing homelessness in Denton County with a 20% increase from 2023’s PIT Count. Though the Coalition was also able to celebrate progress, seeing 983 individuals housed in our community since 2017 and a reduction in homelessness in some key special populations (Veterans and Adults 55+ years old). This awareness and strategies created would not have been made possible without our critical PIT Count volunteers as well as the countless agencies working day in and out to assist residents in need. Thank you for all you do!

Check out who was in attendance and a sneak peek of some of the info they got to see first hand on the morning of!

The full report will be released to the public in the coming weeks and will be shared on the Coalition’s social media accounts and website.
